Algerian diplomat was UN special envoy for Afghanistan

(ANSAMed) - NEW YORK, AUGUST 10 - Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi is expected to replace Kofi Annan as UN-Arab League joint special envoy for Syria, UN diplomatic sources said on Friday.

He edges out former International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, who was also in the running for the post, the soruces said. Brahimi, 78, is a career diplomat whose last post was as UN special envoy for Afghanistan. (ANSAMed).
