Syria: Brahimi new UN and Arab League envoy

(ANSAMed) - NEW YORK, AUG 17 - Algerian diplomat Lakhdar And Brahimi has been confirmed as the new UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria, a spokesperson for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon confirmed Friday. Brahimi replaces former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Ban Ki-moon said he appreciated Brahimi's willing to put his diplomatic experience to the service of 'this fundamental task, which also requires strong support from the international community, including the UN Security Council'. He also highlighted the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict through diplomatic means, adding that, 'new fighting will only aggravate the suffering of the Syrian people.'
