(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JANUARY 22 - The planned
Algeria-Sardinia-Italy gas pipeline (GALSI) is in line with EU
energy needs, but the consortium behind the pipeline will have
to prove EU environmental guidelines are followed properly
before getting European financing, MEPs at a petitions committee
debate at the European Commission said Tuesday.
This follows on a complaint by ProSardegnaNoGasdotto, a Sardinian committee against the proposed pipeline that would bisect the pristine island, of a ''strong discrepancy'' between EU energy needs and the amount of financing GALSI requested.
EU experts replied that the pipeline is needed, but financing will be withheld pending ''notification of measures adopted'' to protect the environment. (ANSAmed).
