(ANSAmed) - BRINDISI - Italy's weightlifting team beat those of Israel and Tunisia, which came in second and third, to win the VII Mediterranean Weightlifting Cup in the southern Italian port of Brindisi two days ago.

The competition saw 4-member teams from Albania, Algeria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, France, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Palestine, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey compete in what organizers described as ''the spirit of peace and collaboration among peoples inherent in this championship since its inception in 2005.'' Televised by Sky Sport and RAI public TV, the Italian quartet made up of Antonio Belloi, Giorgia Bordignon, Mauro Gasparotto and Antonino Pizzolato ascended to highest step on the winner's podium, in a repeat of their 2011 victory in Tel Aviv.

Italian Elastic Ball Federation (FIPE) national rep Maurizio Lo Buono was reelected to another four years as head of the Mediterranean Weightlifting Federation, with Kamla Maghoub from Egypt as secretary general. Lo Buono, who is a Puglia native, brought the championship to Brindisi, which has been nominated for European Sports City in 2014, in collaboration with Puglia regional sports official Maria Campese and other local officials.
