(ANSAmed) - STRASBOURG, FEBRUARY 6 - European Union enlargement to include the western Balkans is a "realistic prospect", EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said on Tuesday.

"It is not an objective, these countries must be anchored to an EU prospect," she added. "The people and leaders of the Balkans have made a clear choice: to carry their countries into the European Union. Each according to its own rhythm and timeframe. And today we are saying to them that we have made the same choice, for us too the prospect is very clear," Mogherini said. "I know that there has been a lots of talk of a date, 2025.

For us it is clear that this is not a deadline but a prospect," she added. "Completing the accession process for those that are currently negotiating but also for others who might start negotiations in future is a realistic prospect," Mogherini said.

European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said he was "optimistic". (ANSAmed).
