(ANSAmed) - SARAJEVO, DECEMBER 3 - The situation at a makeshift refugee camp in Vucjak, in northwestern Bosnia Herzegovina, is ''unacceptable and shameful'', said Dunja Mijatovic, the commissioner for human rights of the Council of Europe, who visited the camp on Tuesday.

''I have never seen anything like this during my career - Mijatovic was quoted as saying by local media - I am ashamed as a Bosnia and Herzegovina'' national. International organizations have long called for the closure of the migrant center of Vucjak, which lacks basic hygienic and sanitary conditions. Over 500 people are currently staying at the facility.

''The situation has worsened - said Selam Midzic of the Red Cross in Bihac - with the first snowfall that made some tents collapse, without forgetting about the lack of heating as temperatures are falling below zero''.

For their part migrants on Tuesday refused water and food, the only warm meal they are receiving, starting a sort of hunger strike to protest against the situation.(ANSAmed).
