Balkan leaders to meet Michel-von der Leyen in Brussels

Conference for post-quake aid to Albania, Di Maio to see Rama

14 February, 14:47

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 14 - Giving new impulse to European enlargement policies and to the prospect of western Balkan countries in joining the Union are the objectives pursued in inviting the leaders of six western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia) to an informal summit on Sunday with the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

After three postponements over the last two years, in the coming weeks the leaders of the 27 members will have to decide on the start of adhesion talks with Albania and North Macedonia.

A green light could come at a summit of EU leaders scheduled at the end of March, if the enlargement reform proposed by the European Commission last week will convince the most recalcitrant countries (including France, the Netherlands and Denmark).

The race towards the start of negotiations for Tirana and Skopje starts Sunday. The informal summit of Balkan leaders, summoned by Michel, will begin at 7:30 pm and will be followed on Monday by a meeting of European foreign ministers who will also discuss the Union's enlargement policies.

Before the start of talks, scheduled at 9:30 am, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio will meet with Albanian Premier Edi Rama to stress Italy's support to the country. In the afternoon, a donor conference organized by the EU to help Albania in its post-quake reconstruction efforts will begin. Di Maio will attend together with representatives of member States and delegations of non-EU countries and international institutions including the United Nations and the World Bank.
