(ANSAmed) - ZAGREB, August 20 - Croatia, affected by a wave of scorching heat, is still experiencing a wildfire emergency, with flames that flare in various parts of the Dalmatian coast and in the interior forest regions.

ßßß Since yesterday, about 200 firefighters backed by three Canadair, are engaged in trying to extinguish a large fire in Šibenik region, along the Adriatic coast, the last of the previous forty outbreaks that have been raging across the country over the last week.

Civil Defence has announced today that from the beginning of the year in Croatia 7,825 fires have erupted, 1,566 more than the same period last year, with the destruction of 56 thousand hectares of vegetation.

The majority is believed to be arsons. (ANSAmed)
