Coronavirus: strong contraction of cruise sector in Croatia

Modest recovery in June for medium-sized, small ships

(ANSAmed) - ZAGREB, JULY 8 - Since March no cruise ship has docked at one of Croatia's ports on the Adriatic, proof of the strong contraction recorded by this sector of tourism, local media reported on Wednesday. From January until the beginning of June, only 15 cruises on large ships were recorded in Croatia, down 91% compared to last year, when there were 156.

All the cruises were registered until March, when this sector ground to a complete halt due to the coronavirus emergency. A small recovery was registered in June, but only on small and medium-sized ships for short excursions organized by local agencies, while large ships able to accommodate thousands of tourists have not returned to the country yet.

The European Commission on Tuesday revised the Croatian GDP forecast for 2020 from the -9.1 estimated a month ago to -10.8.

The dramatic downturn of the tourism sector, the country's economic engine, is among the main causes of this new negative forecast.(ANSAmed). (ANSA).
