Health: Cypriots among world's top 20 "laziest" peoples

(ANSAmed) - NICOSIA, AUGUST 8 - Over half of Cyprus' population is deemed "physically inactive", according to a new global survey, as Cyprus Mail reports today. According to a 2012 study of medical journal The Lancet which reviewed the physical activity levels of 122 countries (or approximately 89% of the world's population), Cyprus is ranked the 16th least active nation in the world. The study found that 55% of Cypriots were "physically inactive", meaning they failed to meet the minimum activity recommendations, which advocate at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, five times a week. The unenviable title of "laziest" country in the world goes to Malta, which has 72% of the population labelled "inactive", with Swaziland coming second (69%) and Saudi Arabia third (69%). Despite the excitement of the Olympics, Britain registered eighth with 63% considered "physically inactive".

Cyprus' position on the table, at 16, is just one above Turkey which had a 56% inactive population and one below fellow Mediterranean country Italy (55%). (ANSAmed).
