Turkey: exploration in Mediterranean extended to 12/9

New Navtex for Oruc Reis surveying off Cyprus

01 September, 12:36

(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, SEPTEMBER 1 - Turkey's controversial oil and gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean off Cyprus will continue at least through September 12, said authorities in Ankara. They issued a new Navtex warning to restrict navigation in the area, where they are already working with the Oruc Reis seismic research vessel. The survey activity was previously scheduled to end on Tuesday. This is the third extension of the Navtex issued last month for prospecting in search of hydrocarbons. The Oruc Reis is accompanied by the ships Ataman and Cengiz Han. The announcement comes after escalating tensions with Greece in recent weeks over disputes on the two countries' respective maritime borders. Ankara is also carrying out military exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean, off Iskenderun on the southern coast of Turkey. The exercises are scheduled to continue through September 11.(ANSAmed).
