Cairo OIC summit ends, Saudi new secretary general

Statement on Syria, Mali and Palestine approved

(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, FEBRUARY 7 - The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit drew to a close on Thursday in Cairo.

Over 20 heads of state and government took part in the proceedings, including Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Former Saudi Minister of Information and Culture Iyyad Madadi was selected by the conference to take the place of Turkey's Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu as secretary general, and a final statement on Syria, Palestine and Mali was approved. On Syria, the leaders from the Muslim world called for ''serious dialogue'' between the opposition and government representatives who ''are ready for political change and are not directly involved in any sort of repression, in order to pave the way for a transition''.
