France says EU action led to Italian arrivals divided by 10

European affairs minister says France does its part

18 February, 13:46

PARIS - French Minister for European Affairs Nathalie Loiseau told French daily Le Monde that France does its part in terms of migrant reception while some other EU countries do not.
"Every time a ship rescues people, neither the Austrian chancellor nor the Polish prime minister nor his Hungarian counterpart do their part by receiving asylum seekers," Loiseau said.
"Not only does France announce it, it then puts it into practice," she said.
Loiseau's comments came in response to a question regarding the Italian government's accusations of hypocrisy by the French government regarding migrant reception.
"We can also be astonished by such a high number of people crossing the Italian border without control," she said, adding that in 2017 and 2018 France was the second European country for asylum requests, at 13,000.
"Between 2017 and 2018, the number of arrivals on Italian shores has been divided by 10 thanks to the action of the European Union. The speeches about an absence of solidarity by partners are political and electoral. France has always defended and put into practice European solidarity solutions," she said.
