(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 23 - The Tourism Task Force of the Committee on Transport and Tourism of the European Parliament warned Wednesday that the tourism sector in the bloc was on the verge of collapse. It noted that the sector employs some 22 million people in Europe and accounts for between 4.3% and 25% of GDP in the various member states. It stressed that hundreds of thousands of SMEs will not survive until the end of the year unless something changes, calling on the European Union to support the sector. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) called for uniform criteria at the EU level for healthcare testing, travel forms, quarantine standards, and healthcare protocol for public transport and spaces. They also urged actions and assurance for SMEs in the tourism sector and clearer information for travellers, as well as a common EU policy for sustainable tourism. (ANSAmed).
