Sarkozy probed for alleged breach of secrecy

(ANSAmed) - PARIS, JANUARY 10 - Judges in Paris have opened a preliminary probe into allegations that former French president Nicolas Sarkozy committed a breach of secrecy.

The case concerns a statement his office issued in September 2011 regarding the so-called Karachi affair.

This is a long-running investigation into a bombing in Pakistan in 2002 that killed 14 people, including 11 French engineers.

There are suspicions that the bombing may in some way have been linked to French bribes.

The 2011 statement said Sarkozy's name did not figure in any of the files on the affair.

The victims' families pressed charges, arguing that the statement violated a law forbidding the release of information about ongoing investigations.(ANSAmed).
