(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, JANUARY 8 - A concert with the Qatar philharmonic orchestra and the launch of the 30th edition of the International book fair in Doha with France as guest of honor are the events scheduled to open the Qatar-France 2020 year of culture.

Cultural events have been planned throughout the year, starting on Friday, with a concert of French music classics with Marc Piollet directing the orchestra. ''Qatar - Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, Qatar's minister of sport and culture was reported as saying by Qatari daily The Peninsula - welcomes each year people from all over the world and we are extremely gratified to have the support of foreign countries chosen for the year of culture.

We are grateful to cultural operators of our country and to French colleagues for the program of events planned for this 2020 and we also expect to raise interest in France, inviting people from both countries to share their ideas and experiences and to deepen their connections''.

The tradition of twinning with another country to promote cultural events has been ongoing since 2012 and this year it is France's turn. ''The year of culture Qatar-France'', stressed France's ambassador to Qatar, Franck Gellet, will continue to promote ''reciprocal understanding, friendship and support between the two countries''. ''Over the last year alone there have been reciprocal visits at a very high level and seven agreements have been forged on defense, security, high training and culture. Bilateral trade between the two countries is flourishing, with an annual increase of 33%. Moreover, the French institute in Qatar has just celebrated its 30 years''.

The program of the cultural year includes visual art events, music, cinema, sport, literature and scientific exchanges.

Exhibits will showcase, among others, a collection of masterworks by Pablo Picasso on loan from the Musée National Picasso in Paris. Events have also been scheduled in France, including screenings from the Doha Film Institute at the next Cannes film festival and at the short-film festival of Clermont-Ferrand. (ANSAmed).
