'World needs to pressure Israel to authorize vote'

07 January, 12:19

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, JANUARY 7 - Palestinian political elections will be held provided they can also take in place in East Jerusalem, something Israel has so far not authorized, Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was quoted as saying by Maan news agency Monday in Bethlehem.

''Our problem with Israel is that it refuses elections in Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine. And we will not hold these elections without Jerusalem'', said Abbas.

''We ask the entire world to put pressure on Israel. We want elections'', he said.

Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, then denounced a series of issues with Israel including the detraction of funds originally allocated for the PNA and the construction of settlements, in particular in Hebron, Maan reported. The PNA will take measures, including serious ones, the PNA president was also quoted as saying, ''but we will not use force, violence or terrorism. We will rather employ diplomacy, as we have done for the past 10 years''. (ANSAmed)
