Abbas urges France and EU to help unblock peace process

'Pressure Israel for Palestinian vote on East Jerusalem'

23 January, 15:31

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, JANUARY 23 - France and the EU in general could play a key role in unblocking the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the WAFA news agency reported Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas as saying during a meeting Wednesday evening in Ramallah with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. He added that the process had been blocked by ''Israeli intransigence and unbalanced positions taken by the Trump administration''. ''We are awaiting recognition of the State of Palestine by European countries that believe in the two-state solution,'' Abbas said. He then reiterated that the Palestinian Authority intends to hold presidential and legislative elections as soon as possible.

However, to do so, he said, Palestinians in East Jerusalem also need to take part. The Palestinian Authority hopes that France and the EU can put pressure to this end on Israel. Macron, WAFA added, has confirmed that France firmly believes in a two-state solution and that it has pledged to help Palestinians build their political structures and support their economy.(ANSAmed).
