Serbia: Conference on Holy Mount Athos held in Belgrade

    (ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, 26 JUNE - Participants of a three-day international conference dedicated to an Orthodox spiritual center, the Holy Mount Athos, Greece, adopted a declaration pointing to the necessity of preserving the legal status of the Holy Mount and making the world familiar with its tradition.

    The conference, which brought together 120 speakers from ten countries, ended on Tuesday and was organized by The World Public Forum Dialogue of Civilizations and the Society of the Mount Athos Friends in Serbia, in cooperation with other societies and friends of Mount Athos from Great Britain and Italy.

    The most important contribution of the Belgrade conference is the discussion on how the monks on Mount Athos treat their surroundings, and the relationship between the ecology of modern mankind and ecology in the light of the monastic experience.

    The Abbot of the Hilandar Monastery, Metodije said that such meetings are important as they point to spiritual and cultural significance of Mount Athos in the modern world. (ANSAmed)
