Italy gets 3.2 mln for sea rescues by coast guard, navy

    (ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JULY 29 - The European Commission has assigned 11 million euros of emergency funding to Italy and Greece to boost efforts on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers arriving or already present in the two countries.

    Italy is to get 3.2 million for sea rescue operations, of which 2.2 million euros will go to the coast guard authorities to provide food for rescued migrants on board coast guard ships and to cover personnel costs.

    The remaining one million euros has been allocated to the navy for the purchase of equipment and protective clothing to be used during medical inspections of rescued migrants.

    In Greece the funding will be used to improve migrant reception and registration capacity. (ANSAmed).
