21 March, 19:25

(ANSAmed) - ROME, MARCH 21 - Italy's Foreign Minister, Giulio Terzi, held talks at the Foreign Ministry today with his Maltese counterpart, Tonio Borg, to mark the state visit to Rome of Malta's President, George Abela, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministers repeated the closeness of bilateral relations and the agreement on regional issues, underlining their common commitment to setting up strengthened dialogue aimed at examining at regular intervals the main questions of interest to both countries on a bilateral, European and Mediterranean scale.

In views of recent immigration episodes, a common commitment has emerged to look urgently and in greater depth at possibilities for collaboration on maritime issues, with particular attention to immigration by sea and cooperation in search and rescue at sea.

Talks focussed at some length on topical European issues and the situation in the Mediterranean, with special attention for developments in Libya. As part of Mediterranean cooperation, Italy expressed its appreciation and support for the "5+5 summit", which Malta is to host next October. (ANSAmed).
