Jordan unemployment reaches 12.5% in 2012

(ANSAmed) - AMMAN, JANUARY 7 - Unemployment in Jordan reached 12.5 during the last quarter of 2012, an increase of nearly half a percent compared to the same period in 2011, according to figures from department of statistics.

Joblessness among women reached 19.9 percent while unemployed men were nearly 10 percent, said the study released on Monday.

Highest rate of unemployment was recorded among holders of university certificate, who make up 53 percent of total unemployed, said the study.

Jordan's economy has been facing difficult challenges amid shrinking foreign investment and lack of new job openings.

A large part of Jordanian labour force is employed in the gulf, but the economic downturn, stiff competition has limited flood of Jordanians to the oil rich states.(ANSAmed).
