Two opposition parties in Kosovo take lead in elections

Self-Determination party 25.70%, LDK 25.07%

    (ANSAmed) - PRISTINA, OCTOBER 7 - The Self-Determination (Vetevendosje) party in Kosovo took first place in early parliamentary elections on Sunday, with 25.7% of the vote and 95% of ballots counted, according to the election commission in Pristina.

    Following very close behind in second place is the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 25.07%, a difference of only 4,775 votes.

    Both parties are part of the opposition.

    In third place is the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), with 21.15% of votes.

    The results don't include mail-in ballots or those of the diaspora.

    The respective candidates for prime minister are Albin Kurti for the nationalist-left Self-Determination party, Vjosa Osmani for the moderate centre-right LDK, and Kadri Veselj for the PDK, the party of Kosovar President Hashim Thaci.

    Observers said a new government could be formed with a coalition between the two opposition forces that captured first and second place in the elections.(ANSAmed).
