(ANSAMed) - ROME, AUGUST 31 - In the final act of the two-month soap opera, Real Madrid is the big summer market scorer, paying 33 million euros for Croatian midfielder Modric. Real Madrid's Mourinho got the player he wanted as he aims at the Champions League trophy, after breaking Barcelona's hegemony in the Spanish championship. Barcelona's Ibrahim Afellay, signed a season-long loan deal with Schalke 04.

After bidding goodbye to Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, Milan strengthened the midfield, acquiring Dutch player De Jong for 6 million euros from Manchester City, as well as Roma striker (ex Barcelona) Bojan Krkic and baby star M'Baye Niang, 18, from Caen.

Inter closed the market season with the sale of its Brazilian winger Maicon. After six seasons, he rejoins his old coach, Roberto Mancini at Manchester City, which in turn ceded Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, who had been courted by both Fiorentina and Juventus, to Fulham. Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart bids goodbye to Tottenham and heads to Hamburg, the club he gave a much-needed boost from 2005-2008, before going on to Real Madrid.

Italian midfielder Enzo Maresca leaves Malaga, returning to his home country and Sampdoria AC. The Spanish club lost important players after Sheik Al-Thani's exit, but managed to acquire Argentine striker Saviola, who will get one last chance to shine in European football. The other Sheik Al-Thani, who owns Paris Saint-Germain, rounded out a multi million dollar buying spree by taking 24-year-old Dutch wing defender van der Wiel off Ajax for 6 million euros.
