06 August, 18:11

(ANSAmed) - BELGRADE, AUGUST 6 - The Serbian parliament elected Monday economist Jorgovanka Tabakovic, 52, the new governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS). Out of 166 MPs present, 131 voted for the election of Tabakovic, 34 were against, there were no abstentions and one MP did not vote. During the debate, the ruling majority pointed to her expertise and expressed confidence that she will be independent of the executive power even more than is required by law. Opposition MPs, while not questioning her competence, expressed reservations that she will be independent, bearing in mind that until the election she was a high official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.

Tabakovic's election was preceded by 7 hours of parliamentary debate.

Government moves to step up control over the central bank has brought strong criticism from the European Union, World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
