Spain: Tourism down due to crisis

Hotel reservations -3.4%, services -5.4%

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JULY 17 - Travel agencies and tour operators in Spain reported a 6.4 decrease in business in May on an annual basis due to the economic crisis, the national statistics bureau Ine reported today. Hotel reservations went down 3.4 percent with unemployment rising in the tourism services and hotel sectors by 4.6 percent and 2.4 percent respectively, Ine also said.

Overall the services went down 5.4 percent in May compared to the same month in 2011. In April, the volume in the tourism business had registered an 8.4 percent decrease on an annual basis, the most significant fall since 2009.

Air travel decreased 2.6 percent in May while trains registered a 7.3 percent fall. (ANSAmed).
