London Olympics: Gibraltar terror plot foiled

Remote controlled plane to drop bomb, 3 suspects arrested

(ANSAMed) - LONDON, AUGUST 8 - A plot to bomb Gibraltar's main shopping center while hundreds of people watched the Olympics on large screen TV has been foiled, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais. Three suspected al-Qaeda terrorists, Cengiz Yalcin, Mohamed Adamov and Eldar Magomedov, are in custody in Spain.

British intelligence service MI6 was involved in monitoring the suspects prior to their arrests, the reports said. A raid by Spanish police in the home of Yalcin, who is Turkish, turned up a video which was said to show him piloting a large remote-controlled plane. The aircraft drops two packages from the air to the ground. Police also found explosives and parts for three paragliding machines, said El Pais.

A Spanish judge had Yalcin arrested on possession of explosives for terrorist ends, and had Adamov and Magomedov, who are both arrested for explosives possession and belonging to a terrorist organization. Magomedov is allegedly a former Russian special forces member and an explosives expert, and the two other suspects are both Chechen. All three men are thought to have connections with al Qaeda.
