(ANSAmed) - MADRID, APRIL 16 - Researchers at the Spanish Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) have developed a dietary supplement containing all the disease-fighting properties of the Mediterranean diet in a single pill.

Developed jointly with Morales Meseguer University Hospital in Murcia, the pill is called Silvid Cardio, and has proven capable of reducing bio-markers for heart disease by 57%, with no side effects and no adverse reactions to medication the person may be taking. The clinical trials on 150 patients were corroborated by over 20 publications in international medical reviews.

''This is a socially useful product, which contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular disease and complements existing treatments'', CSIS President Emilio Lora-Tamayo said at the Stilvid Cardio launch. The pill contains polyphenol-rich grape extract and antioxidants such as procyanidins, hydroxytyrosol (which comes from olive oil), and vitamin B. Clinical trials on heart patients showed Stilvid Cardio caused a 23% increase in a natural anti-inflammatory substance called adiponectin, which combats heart disease. ''This is the only dietary supplement that has shown beneficial effects. This is an important step forward in cardiovascular disease prevention'', Lora-Tamayo said. Stilvid Cardio requires daily intake and will be marketed at 25 euros, according to European Medical Academy Federation President Jesus Fernandez Tresguerres, who is the scientific director at Spanish pharmaceutical company ActaFarma. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer worldwide, and an estimated 25 million people will die of it by 2030, according to the World Health Organization. In Spain in 2009, 3 out of 9 deaths were due to heart disease, according to the Spanish National Statistical Institute. (ANSAmed).
