Crisis: Spain; Basque Country,8th day of strike against cuts

30 May, 12:40

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, MAY 30 - A general strike called in Navarra and the Basque Country organized by independence-minded unions Ela, Lab, Esk, Stee-Eilas and by Cgt and Cnt kicked off this morning without significant incidents. The walkout was called against austerity measures and to demand alternative policies to public spending cuts. Thursday's is the eighth day of general strike organized by the two regions since the start of the economic crisis.

Sources from the government's delegation said participation in the strike was higher among public employees and lower among retailers. The objective of the protest, union sources said, is to launch 'a social rights card for Euskal Herria', the Basque Country, to defend workers' rights amid cuts, conservative economic policies passed by the central government, a cut in funds allocated to the region, and an upcoming reform of pensions announced by the government of Mariano Rajoy.
