Jordan on alert as Syrian rebels attack border posts

25 March, 16:53

(ANSAmed) - AMMAN, MARCH 25 - Jordan on Monday raised level of alert among its forces in the north following reports of serious clashes between rebels and Syrian forces on Nasseeb border crossing, security sources said.

Sound of gunfire and explosions could be heard from the Jordanian side of the border as rebels closed in on the border post following days of fighting.

Eye witnesses said several wounded fighters were transferred to Jordan for treatment after being injured in clashes to seize control over key military base in the area.

Government spokesman Sameeh Mayta said authorities in Amman will do whatever necessary to protect the kingdom's border but insisted the door is open for refugees to seek asylum in his country. ''We will protect our border but at the same time will not close our doors before refugees,'' said Mayta. Naseeb border is the largest between Jordan and Syria, from which most imports and exports as well as transit goods cross.(ANSAmed).
