(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT - Italian Jesuit priest Paolo Dall'Oglio, who disappeared in the rebel-held city of Raqqa on July 29, has been killed by al-Qaeda affiliated militias, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Wednesday.

''Once again, this kind of report must be taken with extreme caution. We have no confirmation at present,'' the Italian foreign ministry said in a note.

''Italian Jesuit and messenger of peace, Father Paolo Dall'Oglio, was killed while being held by fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), who held him captive for more than two weeks,'' the British-based monitoring group said citing local activists in Raqqa with close links to Dall'Oglio.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Wednesday called for those who allegedly killed Jesuit priest Paolo Dall'Oglio to be brought to justice. The NGO urged Syrian opposition forces to exert pressure to find out what happened to the priest ''so his killers can be held to account''. (ANSAmed).
