(ANSAmed) - TUNIS - Ras Angela, 17 km from Bizerte, was declared on Monday the northernmost point of the African continent by the Tunisian tourism ministry. The natural beauty of the site, its beach and the Mediterranean vegetation on the hills behind it has led to the Association de Protection et de Sauvegarde du Littoral de Bizerte, in collaboration with the tourism department of the Bizerte governorate, to undertake several projects.

Some have already been completed, including one to improve road signs and conditions to facilitate access to the area, build reception facilities and restore buildings near the lighthouse. A stele depicting the African continent was unveiled for the occasion in the presence of Tunisia's tourism minister, Amel Karboul, and officials from diplomatic missions in the country. The region will be the focus of other, similar initiatives and a promotional campaign in the media over the coming months, noted the tourism ministry. (ANSAmed).
