Tunisia: Parliament to hold confidence vote on Mechichi govt

Needs 109 votes for approval

01 September, 11:48

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, SEPTEMBER 1 - The Tunisian Parliament is scheduled to hold a confidence vote Tuesday on the government of Prime Minister-designate Hichem Mechichi and his team, made up of technocrats and independents.

This is the toughest step for Mechichi, who needs 109 votes for approval.

Despite difficulties on the eve of the vote in trying to find common ground with the various political parties, in recent hours the possibility of approval has become more likely, at least considering statements from the major parties.

Islamic Ennahda (54 MPs), Qalb Tounes (27 MPs), and National Reform (16 MPs) said they will vote yes in the best interests of the country.

However, the Islamist coalition Al-Karama, Echaab, and Attayar (Democratic group with 38 MPs) said they will vote against. (ANSAmed).
