Syria: 50 condemn arms sales to Damascus

Joint appeal to regime's financers: Break ties with Assad

17 April, 20:07

(ANSAmed) - PARIS, APRIL 17 - Around fifty nations and international organisations, including the USA, the European Union, Italy and the Arab League have today expressed their ''strong disapproval of any financial or other kind of support'' to the Syrian regime. They especially condemn ''the continuation of arms sales'' to Damascus.

The condemnation comes in a note issued at the conclusion of a summite held by diplomatic officials and organised by the French Foreign Ministry. The message goes on to invite ''all of the states in the group of friends of the Syrian people, and all states that have not yet exercised any pressure, to unite in the effort to isolate the regime still further,'' as well as ''the businesspeople who financially sustain the bloody repression and presons who otherwise contribute, to break all of their ties with the Bashar Assad regime''. Another objective is to obtain ''compliance by the Syrian authorities with their obligations under the plan of the Special Envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League, Kofi Annan, and the enactment of political transition fulfilling the democratic aspirations of the people''. Among other participant nations at the conference were Switzerland, Monaco, Australia, Canada and Turkey. Neither Russia nor Lebanon were represented. (ANSAmed).
