Kidnapping is 'contrary to our traditions', says Naela Nasser

(ANSAmed) - LONDON, JULY 31 - Yemen's Olympic committee launched an appeal Tuesday for the release of an Italian policeman kidnapped in their homeland. Naela Nasser, head of the Yemeni delegation to the Olympics, told ANSA that the kidnapping of Alexander Spadotto was "contrary to our traditions" and an act that "no one can approve of".

Spadotto, a Carabinieri officer providing security at Italy's embassy in Yemen's capital city of Sanaa, was kidnapped Sunday by a local tribe.

The tribe is demanding a prisoner exchange for Spadotto's safe release.

In a phone conversation Monday, Yemen's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abu Bakr al Qirbi assured his Italian counterpart Giulio Terzi of the Sanaa government's efforts to find the kidnapped officer.
