(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, MAY 19 - European Union culture ministers on Tuesday officially declared southern Italian city Matera the 2019 European Capital of Culture.

The Basilicata tourist mecca is famed for its UNESCO-listed 'Sassi' City of Stone that has formed the backdrop to several films including Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to St Matthew and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.

It is Italy's fourth city to win the title, following Florence (1986), Bologna (2000) and Genoa (2004). Matera shares the culture capital role with Plovdiv in Bulgaria.(ANSAmed).
