(ANSAmed) - ROME, AUGUST 22 - A 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Italian island Ischia on Monday evening, striking at a depth of around 5km just north of the Casamicciola commune.

At least two women were killed and 39 people were injured by the quake on the island popular with tourists. Several buildings have collapsed.

The two dead were women, one buried by plaster in a church and the other engulfed by the ruins of her house. One of the injured is in a serious condition. Rescuers are digging to find a boy, aged three, in the ruins of a house that collapsed at Casamicciola after his two brothers aged three and seven months were pulled out alive. Firefighters weer said to be close to the boy, Ciro, after pulling out Mattias.

The two toddlers were said to have had bottles of water passed to them by the rescue workers. Two men and two women have also been pulled out from underneath the rubble of their collapsed homes. Tourists are leaving the island as quickly as possible out of fear of aftershocks, some on special ferries made available.
