Coronavirus stops Parma 2020 Italian culture capital

Councilor Guerra:'let's continue to work, nothing will be lost'

13 March, 12:59

(ANSAmed) - PARMA, MARCH 13 - ''Parma 2020 Italian capital of culture needs to stop, but its team will continue to work while waiting to know when it will start again'', municipal culture councilor, Michele Guerra, said on Facebook, referring to the coronavirus emergency. ''Will we be Parma 2021? I know that we will be stronger than before. It is necessary to give a sign to all the people who are giving us so much energy- Nothing will be lost'', the councilor said.

''The health emergency the country is going through forces us to postpone many projects - explained Guerra in a video message - and to cancel many of them. This, which was supposed to be a year of opening, of inclusion, of cultural dialogue with our citizens and the many people who would have arrived in Parma, is grinding to a halt. Theaters, cinemas and concert halls are closed, personalities and international guests who were meant to come to Parma will not be able to do so and don't feel safe to visit our area. It is a moment of great social, cultural, economic and political difficulty and it will be difficult to restore even the normal habits of resident citizens. We hope that the health emergency can diminish, that people will be able to go out again and that this cultural strength which Parma demonstrated during the first two months (initiatives kicked off on January 11) can return''. ''We hope, however, that the government takes into serious consideration the hypothesis of moving Parma 2020 to 2021, an appeal - stressed councilor Guerra - to Governor Stefano Bonaccini because it is a great occasion not just of cultural development but also of attraction for our territories. I think that thanks to the great project of the Italian cultural capital it is important to move Parma 2020 to 2021, not only to recover this year's damages, but also to keep a promise that Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and the entire Emilia-Romagna have made to the country''.
