(ANSAmed) – Rome, November 22 – The Colosseum will be lit up on Sunday November 25 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno said on Thursday.

"It is a symbolic gesture, but important so as to ensure that these horrors do not remain in the shadows," Alemanno added. "Rome has always been on the front line in defense of womens' rights and in the condemnation of every form of violence". The Colosseum is a historic amphitheatre in the centre of the Italian capital. It is the largest similar structure in the world to have been built during the Roman Empire.

The monument will be lit starting 5pm Italian time. Women's activists in 1981 named November 25 the international day to fight violence against women. In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly confirmed it as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with Resolution 54/134.
