30 January, 15:10

(ANSAmed) - BARI, JANUARY 30 - The co-president of the Euro-Mediterranean regional and local assembly (ARLEM), Mohamed Boudra, has been speaking at a press conference in Bari today with his fellow co-president, Mercedes Bresso and the president of the Puglia region, Nichi Vendola. "2011 will be remembered as the year of the Arab Spring, of popular movements in the Mediterranean coming from regions and from young people," Boudra said at the press conference, which illustrated the targets and priorities of the Assembly's third plenary session. "The work of ARLEM is inspired by the fight against social injustice and the lack of freedom and democracy".

"ARLEM is trying to provide concrete answers and assists the development of local policies and regionalisation. It is through the exchange of experience at times such as this plenary session that the Arab Spring can find further benefits," Boudra said. The Assembly analysed partnerships and joint projects between regions and cities, and focussed on new cooperation opportunities provided by recent developments in the institutional framework of a number of Mediterranean countries. Representatives were able to share strategies and practices elaborated to tackle the main issues linked to sustainability.

Four proposals were examined and adopted. The first concerns the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage in the Mediterranean (report put forward by Turkey's Azim Guzelbey); the second is centred on the role of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Mediterranean (Fathallah Oualalou from Morocco), the third on renewable energy in the Mediterrnean (Michel Lebrun - Wallonia) and the fourth is based on the relationship between desertification and climate change in the Mediterranean (drafted by the president of the Puglia regional authority, Nichi Vendola).

The new co-president of the group of Mediterranean partners was also appointed at the third plenary session, with the Moroccan Mohamed Boudra's term about to expire. Boudra will be repaced in July by the governor of Giza (Egypt), Youssef Ali Abdelrahman, who will be flanked by Ramon Luis Valcarcel, the current governor of the Spanish region of Murcia. Valcarcel replaces Mercedes Bresso at the head of the Committee of Regions at the European Union. (ANSAmed).
