(ANSAmed) - PALERMO, OCTOBER 2 - A world debut commissioned by Palermo's Massimo Theater was presented on Wednesday morning by its authors Ludovico Einaudi, Colm Toibin and director Roberto Andò.

The debut is scheduled on Friday, October 4 at 8:30 pm.

''Winter journey'' tells the story of an immigrant who leaves his family in Africa - his wife in a war zone and his child hidden by relatives. He decides to board one of the many boats departing from Libya's coast to follow his dream: working and sending money back home.

It is the first play for Einaudi and Toibin. ''The theme was chosen by the Massimo'' theater, said superintendent Giambrone, ''which thus celebrates Palermo as a welcoming city''.

''The theme - observed the director Roberto Andò - risked being rhetoric, it wasn't easy'' but the play was written ''by an excellent writer, the Irish Colm Toibin, and it is a real fortune. But perhaps the most interesting thing is the great reflection on Europe, on its role, on ideals that have been lost, we can perhaps say that it is a voyage towards the winter of Europe''.

The singers are Badara Seck of Senegal and Mali's Rokia Traoré, who speak and sing in their language while the rest of the play is in English. Among the characters interpreted by actors is a politician who sows fear among the population. A choir sings and videos are by Luca Scarzella are part of the performance.

''The music - explained Einaudi - is a mixture of different traditions and sometimes songs and melodies are like a prayer for the world and Europe that risk disintegration''. One of the play's mantras is ''this is the scream of a crying Europe''. The heritage of ''Winterreise'' by Franz Schubert, which has inspired the title, is very much present. The play runs through October 8. (ANSAmed).
