France: National library flooded, documents damaged

15 January, 12:56

(ANSAmed) - PARIS, JANUARY 15 - The literature and art section of the French national library, one of the most important worldwide, was flooded on Sunday night with tens of thousands of books sustaining damage, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the library's direction and quoted by local media. Flooded storage rooms were reportedly emptied immediately to limit damage and documents were stored in reading rooms.

According to initial estimates, 10-12,000 works were more or less damaged but only once everything will be dried in the coming days more precise details of the damage sustained will be available.

The incident was reportedly caused by the explosion of PVC pipework due to excessive pressure. 'This is the result of budget cuts to maintenance', said in a statement Fsu, the main union representing the public sector.(ANSAmed).
