    - Brussels - An exhibition of photographs depicting the plight of Syrian refugees along the Balkan route to Europe opened at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday.

'Roads of Survival' and the accompanying book have been put together by the foundation of the Greek parliament in Athens. "Those who keep their borders closed in order to keep these people out - people who are uprooted because they have no choice - will find the real enemy at home: fascism, racism, xenophobia," Speaker of the Greek Parliament Nikos Voutsis said.

"The Europe that celebrates its festival today does not need boundaries, religious fundamentalism, new crusades and colonies, it needs bridges of peace, or solidarity, of security and multiculturalism," he added. The photographs on show "are bridges that draw us close to the eyes of these people, in them we see our fathers and grandfathers who also moved en masse along Roads of Survival." "For us photojournalists who tell the stories of the refugees these are not just photographs, they are human beings. They are Alì, who came to Europe with his three children, Mohamed, who lived in a container in Syria, they arrive from Syria and other war zones: we cannot stop them, we cannot turn our back on them," said Marios Lolos, president of the Greek federation of photojournalism.
