ROME - ENI and Algeria's Sonatrach are inaugurating the photovoltaic plant of Bir Rebaa North worth 10 MW and have signed agreements on the renewable energy sector, according to a statement.
The statement said that the president director general of the State-run Algerian company Sonatrach, Abdelmoumem Ould Kaddour, and the CEO of ENI, Claudio Descalzi, have inaugurated a solar energy plant worth 10 MW in Bir Rebaa North (BRN) in Algeria.
The plant, jointly operated by ENI and Sonatrach through GSA (Groupement Sonatrach-Agip), will provide green energy to the oil field, contributing to the decarbonization of the Algerian energy sector. During the opening ceremony, in order to further boost their partnership in the renewable energy sector, ENI and Sonatrach have signed an accord to build a laboratory of development and advanced research at the BRN site to test solar and hybrid technology in a desert.
The two companies have also signed an accord to widen their cooperation through the creation of a joint venture entirely dedicated to the renewable energy sector in Algeria.
The joint venture will have the purpose of installing and managing plants for the production of solar energy not just in the production sites of Sonatrach and ENI but also in other contexts.
The photovoltaic plant of BRN is proof that renewable energy projects can provide an efficient support to oil and gas activities to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
These initiatives represent an integral part of the strategy ENI is developing in each country in which it operates that vies to change the energy mix of its activities by replacing energy from fossil sources with renewable sources, providing green energy also to national networks.
ENI's CEO, Claudio Descalzi, said: ''This represents a further step forward towards the strategic expansion of renewable energy activities in Algeria, starting with this plant that is considered an example for solar technologies. This structure is the proof of ENI's work in the development of a decarbonization plan for the long-term sustainability of its business, based on the reduction of the carbon impact through the development of renewable energy projects. Moreover, the BRN project stresses how strong and close is the spirit of cooperation between ENI and Sonatrach''.
