CAGLIARI - Italy is the top destination of cruises in the Mediterranean with about 40% of the overall traffic. This year, the number of passengers are expected to grow - a little over 12 million, up 8.8% on 2018 - and for stopovers (4,857, up 3,2%), according to data provided by Italian Cruise Watch ahead of the ninth edition of Italian Cruise Day, the sector's national forum scheduled in Cagliari on Friday, October 18.
Nine Italian ports are among the top 20 Mediterranean cruise destinations, including four that are in the top 10.
Civitavecchia is expected to remain in second position behind Barcelona in terms of passengers (2.56 million, up 4,94% from 2018), and stopovers (827, up 8,82%). Venice is fifth, Genoa sixth and Naples seventh. They are followed by Leghorn (11th), Savona (15th), La Spezia (16th), Bari (18th) and Palermo (19th).
At a regional level, Liguria will earn at the end of 2019 the top position for cruise traffic with 2.89 million passengers in eight ports ahead of Lazio, which ranked second with 2.57 million passengers despite its 4.9% growth on 2018. Veneto ranked third with 1.55 million passengers.
''The sector is growing in the world and also in Italy - explained Francesco Di Cesare from Risposte Turismo - and these numbers give the idea of a sector that is going very well. After years during which the threshold of 11 million passengers seemed like a limit that could not be surpassed, 2019 is registering a significant acceleration. Investments and the work of operators and the favorable morphology and historic-artistic richness and landscape, have contributed to determine Italy's leadership at a Mediterranean and European level''.
Spain, however, is worthy of attention: it has halved in five years the traffic gap from 7.3 million passengers in 2014 to 9.7 million in 2018.
