NAPLES - The Greek tourism ministry will organise a working group to create a national observatory for sustainable tourism development. Minister Harry Theoharis made the announcement after signing the agreement initiating the project. The observatory will gather data on the environmental impact of tourism in the country to then bring in policies to increase sustainability. The working group will consist of seven high-level officials from the ministry, tourism sector experts, and representatives from the academic sphere. The Greek Travel Pages website noted that in the coming months, the working group will gather information to create a sustainable tourism index, submit proposals to the government for the development of an information system on tourism data, and gather data on tourism trends at the local, regional, national, and international levels, making it possible to make timely decisions for the management and promotion of Greece as a destination. It will also draw up a map of areas in which the offices for the observatory will be set up and submit proposals and guidelines for the development of information systems facilitating the development of sustainable tourism and the transformation of the country's tourist destinations. The working group will be tasked with implementing the first four actions by February 28. (ANSAmed).
