(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JULY 2 - Turkish threats against Cyprus
about offshore gas exploration 'are absolutely unfounded' under
international law but will not be taken lightly, Minister for
European Affairs Andreas D. Mavroyiannis told reporters today.
'We asked Turkey to be coherent with international law', Mavroyiannis said. 'The discovery of important oil and gas deposits in Cypriot waters by Israel's partners could be useful not only to Cyprus, but to the energetic security of the EU as a whole'.
Mavroyiannis stressed that the general idea behind the Cypriot EU leadership is 'to avoid controversy and maintain a constructive approach with all partners, Turkey included'. The issue of offshore fuel exploration is a national one and will not affect the Cyprus EU presidency, the Minister added.
