(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JANUARY 08 - The European Union's
latest contribution to the Palestinian Authority's payment of
social allowances to poor and vulnerable Palestinian families in
the West Bank and Gaza amounted to just under 11 million.
According to the Enpi website (www.enpi-info.eu), the
contribution will reach 54,900 Palestinian families in need.
Over half of the target population lives in Gaza. Eligible beneficiaries, identified in cooperation with the PA Ministry of Finance, are households living in extreme poverty receiving assistance in the framework of the national cash transfer programme run by the PA Ministry of Social Affairs - which aims to provide basic safety net to the poorest and most vulnerable Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, through cash and in-kind assistance. ''The important institution-building work - which will continue - is coupled with regular financial contributions to the payment of social allowances like this one'' the European Union Representative, John Gatt-Rutter said. ''I would also like to thank all donors (namely Austria, Belgium and Switzerland) - Gatt-Rutter added - for supporting this programme throughout the year and entrusting the PEGASE mechanism to channel their funds''. Payments are made across a network of local banks.
