(ANSAmed) - MADRID, FEBRUARY 7 - The comic opera 'Retaliation', composed by Saverio Mercadante during his stay in the Andalusian city of Cadiz and recovered by maestro Riccardo Muti, and Mozart's Don Giovanni, the myth par excellence of Southern Europe, are two of the most keenly awaited operas the 2012-2013 season of the Teatro Real in Madrid.

The program, which will celebrate the 15 th anniversary of the reopening of the Madrid Opera, was presented today by the artistic director, Gerard Mortier, at a press conference with President of the Patrons of the Teatro Real, Gregorio Maraon, and the general director Miguel Muiz. Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Philip Glass are some of the protagonists of the program for next season, which will include an appearance by Placido Domingo in the premiere of' 'The Postman' by Daniel Catal, based on the homonymous work of Pablo Neruda. The program has been affected by the crisis, said Gregory Maraon, with an estimated cost of 13.6 million euros, compared with 18 million for the 2010 season, and a reduction of payments by the public authorities from 58% to 42%, "thanks to the their own activities and patronage." As stressed by Mortier, the Teatro Real will for the first time stage Boris Gudunov by Musorgski, in a new production under the musical direction of Hartmut Haenchen, "a work which reflects the loneliness of the powerful visionary and the fascination of people for false prophets." 'Sister Angelica' and 'The Prisoner' are also on the bill - the latter set in the Spain of Philip II - in which, respectively, Puccini and Dallapiccola address the issue of political dictatorships and repressive moral dogmatism.

'Macbeth' by Verdi, from the contemporary perspective of conductor Teodor Currentzis, is scheduled for December 2012. It will be followed by the premiere of' The Perfect American, an opera composed by 75 year-old Philip Glass for the Teatro Real, dedicated to the figure of Walt Disney, who has influenced the contemporary world like few others, and inspired by the novel by Peter Stephan Jungk.

As for Mozart, apart from Don Giovanni, the Madrid Opera will stage a new production of Cosi fan tutte', with the musical direction of Sylvain Cambreling and scenery by Michael Haneke, and 'Die Zauberflote'.

One of the keystones of the program is the second appearance of Riccardo Muti with 'Retaliation' by Mercadante. After the success of 'The two Figaros', he is continuing his project of restoring the opera scores 'Naples and Europe', carried out in the last five years at the festivals of Salzburg and Ravenna.

Muti will stage 'Retaliation' in Madrid in May 2012. This is a forgotten work, rediscovered in Spain, composed by Mercadante in Cadiz at the end of 1828, during his trip to the Andalusian port, Mediterranean bridge between Europe and the Americas, and given its world premiere a year later, in 1829, again in Cadiz.

This unjustly forgotten "treasure" is by the Italian composer, who spent most of his career in the Spanish theatre - in Spain, in 1826, Mercadante wrote 'The two Figaros' - helping to revive the great historical and cultural ties between his native Naples and the Iberian Peninsula. (ANSAmed).
