(ANSAMed) - LONDON, AUGUST 10 - The UK will increase non-military aid to the Syrian opposition by 5 million pounds, British Foreign Minister William Hague said at a press conference on Friday.

While most of the aid is going to the Free Syrian Army (FSA), it is earmarked for non-lethal uses, such as telecommunications equipment and medical supplies, the minister said.

''The Syrian people cannot wait forever,'' Hague said.

Also on Friday, the minister wrote in a column on The Times daily newspaper that the UK Foreign Office is taking steps to contact Syrian opposition figures in France, Jordan and Turkey. ''We are actively preparing for life after Assad,'' Hague wrote, adding that the contacts with the opposition will serve to fill a void, that ''al-Qaeda and other extremists'' might otherwise take advantage of.
